The sons of Herbert and Ethel (nee Trehearne) he was born in Chipstead, Surrey. Denis Kirk MRCVS and his brother Maurice Kirk MRCVS were the second two Veterinary Surgeons in the Patrol. Both transferred out in April 1943. They both worked for Messrs Saunders, Kirk and Kirk of Bridge Street, Taunton.
Maurice Kirk joined the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and was awarded the rank of Captain. He was killed in March 1945 aged 31 and is buried at Lille Southern Cemetery, France. He is remembered on the War Memorial at St Margaret's Church, Coulsdon, Surrey.
He married Coralie Sparke in 1938 of Dorking, Surry who was also a vet.
