Born in Edinburgh, he was the son of Lieutenant Colonel Albert De Lande Long, Peter married Mary Boswell-Smith in 1946. They divorced in 1959.
He became Fellow, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (F.R.I.C.S.).

Peter was educated initially in Scotland and then at Winchester College, going on to study Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, where he did an additional fourth year in aeronautical engineering.
Land Agent at the Cowdray Estate
Following University he joined the firm of Fisher, Sanders & Co, Chartered Surveyors and Land Agents in Market Harborough. In September 1941 he moved to become Agent at the Cowdray Estate, Midhurst, Sussex where he worked until 1949. It was while working at Cowdray that Peter was part of the Goodwood Patrol.
He was awarded the Defence Medal at stand down.
Due to a back injury sustained when he was at university Peter was unable to pass the medical to enter the army and play an active part in WW2. However, he signed up for the Home Guard in October 1940 while still living in Market Harborough, his service in the Goodwood Patrol started in September 1941 when he moved from Market Harborough to Cowdray.
