Bob's daughter Nancy recalled her father was often out at night. She remembers running to her parent's bedroom during bombing raids, being scared by the noises and searchlights. He was never there and she was aware it wasn't a time when he would be working on the farm.
She remembers he had a revolver and Sten gun and knew that there was "secret stuff" in a locked cupboard under the stairs.
The family remember him going away for training to Coleshill
The Strathern family moved to Essex from Ayrshire in 1929/30.
