Roy was discharged from Auxiliary Units 24th November 1943 to join the Royal Marines and saw active service in Italy. He was at boarding school for the early part of the war, turning 18 in 1942. The family recall he was only in the Patrol on school holidays.
He was the eldest son of Auxilier Howard Howell.
