Signalman Thomas F. “Tom” Higgins
Biography
Wireless amateur callsign G8JI. Claimed to be the first Ham overseas, flying into Rheims on 2 Sep 1939, and eventually left Brest on 22 Jun 1940.
Bill Bartholomew recalled that Tom had been hit by a shell casing while in London and had a dent in his tin hat to prove it. While at Batchelor's Hall he dived headfirst down the staircase when a plane flew low over the house. Bill also recalled Tom taking a knife to a piece of cheese and managing to cut a 100 year old plate in half.
