The son of Alfred and Beatrice (nee Thomas) Groom, Aubrey and Tudor and Albert Francis were brothers. He married Eluned John in 1946.

Albert Francis Groom was one of three brothers to Aubrey Eric, and the young giant of the family. He was a forestry worker at the time of war but had also previously been part of the gamekeeping driving/beating teams on the Margam Estate shoots, as this was very much a family duty even for the young boys.
